Church School

The Sunday school at St. George’s meets from September to June during the 10:30 am service offering nurture and educational opportunities for children from two to early teens. The entire St. George’s family meets in the sanctuary for the opening hymn and prayers, following which the children are dismissed to go with their teachers for a time of singing and learning in age appropriate groups. The children then return to the sanctuary in time to participate in the Eucharist.

There are three main areas of the church utilized by the Church School:

The Undercroft

For those aged 2 ½ to 6, there is a story drawn from the ‘Beulah Land’ felt board curriculum developed by Gretchen Wolff Pritchard — “Beulah Land offers a way to tell the stories of our faith, week by week, using a consistent set of visual materials that help children enter into the stories, remember them, play with them, and test their power against the realities of their own lives” (for more information on this curriculum visit the Beulah Land website.)

The children start with a time of worship followed by a story and a craft that pertains to the story that was told.

The Huron Room

Children aged 7-8 meet in the Huron Room, just up the stairs from the Undercroft. Here the kids will ‘cut their teeth’, learning the basics of scripture and the Christian faith.

The Memorial Room

Kids 9-13 meet in the Memorial Room upstairs across from the rector’s office. Here the concentration is on deeper engagement with the Scriptures and the Christian faith, asking questions and discussing these things together as a group. This group is up with the congregation at various times during the year to be given the opportunity to worship.
Summer Sunday school is offered in July and August for the children from the ages of 2½ to 10. Volunteers from the congregation teach one or more Sundays as they are able.

The children are given the opportunity to stay in church two times a year, once at the early Christmas Eve service and on Easter Sunday. Craft packages are prepared for the children containing materials that relate to these days of celebration and can either be used during these services or taken home.

Nursery is fully staffed during the 10:30 service throughout the year for those children under the age of 2½.

St. George’s follows the Safe Church/Screening in Faith policies of the Diocese of Huron. See “Our Sacred Trust: Children and Youth Ministry Manual.”
