Advent IV – Year C

Micah 5:2-5a; Psalm 80:1-7; I Hebrews 10:5-10; Luke 1:39-55

Rev. Dr. Tim Connor

Against a backdrop of the work of powerful kings and rulers, the Christmas gospel reminds us that God is at work in the unlikeliest of places to lead people into the way of peace. O Magnum Mysterium, the great mystery, is how God at work in history brings forth the savior of the world from one lowly woman.

O Magnum Mysterium – Morten Lauridsen

A Responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas

Latin text

O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Christum.
Alleluia.

English Text

O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!
