Living in an age that values a personal sense of privilege and self-fulfillment above all else, the searing critique of social injustice that John the Baptist brings makes us uncomfortable. John prepares the way for the coming of the Suffering Servant, God’s grace embodied in the person of Jesus Christ. He speaks to us through real people, sometimes in the dry, lonely places in our lives. The encounter can come through unexpected people, challenging us to see the world through new eyes and calling us to reach out in acts of love. When we serve others not only do we serve Jesus, we see him.
